When sunlight makes you ill | Dr. Barbara Franz on the connection between sunlight and skin cancer

The bathing season has begun and the noble pallor should give way to a healthy tan. After all, the sun’s rays have a positive effect on mood and well-being and ensure that our vitamin D pots fill up. Skin specialists, however, are getting in on the act as spoilsports and warn against too much sunbathing. This is because UV radiation can cause serious damage to the skin. Sunburns, premature ageing of the skin and, above all, white (basal or squamous cell carcinoma) and black skin cancer (melanoma) are of great concern to dermatologists. Around 2,000 people are diagnosed with malignant melanoma in Austria every year, and the number of people affected has risen dramatically in the last 20 years.
