An eyelid lift is one of the most frequently performed procedures in aesthetic dermatology, as many people suffer from drooping eyelids. Drooping eyelids can have various causes – some sufferers have had them since childhood, while for others they only appear later in life. Despite the fact that this is a cosmetic rather than a medical problem, my patients often complain about its effects. What are drooping eyelids?
Drooping eyelids (medical term: blepharochalasis) occur when the upper eyelid hangs down over the eye due to a lack of elasticity or tension. Drooping eyelids can occur in one or both eyes; men and women are equally affected.
Bags under the eyes are the counterpart to drooping eyelids, which refer to swelling of the lower eyelid. This swelling of the lower eyelid is caused by fat and water deposits, which usually occur as a result of stress and age. I also offer treatments against dark circles in my practice!
What are the causes of drooping eyelids?
There are various causes of drooping eyelids or a drooping eyelid:
- Age-related changes to the skin and connective tissue: With increasing age, the skin becomes thinner and less elastic. In addition, the small "connective tissue cushions" between the eyelid and the eyeball shrink. All these factors can lead to a drooping eyelid.
- Excessive sun exposure: UV radiation damages the skin and leads to a loss of collagen and elastin fibers. As a result, the skin becomes more fragile and can no longer regress as easily, which can lead to drooping eyelids.
- Genetic: In some people, a drooping eyelid is simply genetic - it runs in the family.
- Temporary water retention (edema): These occur more frequently due to excessive alcohol or nicotine consumption as well as fatigue and stress.
Why should I have an eyelid lift?
As mentioned above, it can become a medical necessity to remove excess skin from the eyes, as this sometimes results in the patient’s visual field being restricted. However, many patients also opt for an eyelid lift for aesthetic reasons alone. Drooping eyelids often make the patient look tired, stressed, tense and ill.
